From an early age, whether through reading Aesop's Fables
or studying American history, we are reminded time and
again, "United we stand, Divided we fall." It is such an obvious and
basic tenant of successful management that it seems almost unnecessary
to discuss. Yet many of the most troubling, systemic problems that affect
an organization's ability to attract and retain new customers can
be directly linked to instances where someone has forgotten the importance
of this critical law of business.
Take for
example, the constant positioning that can occur between Sales and
its sister departments (Marketing, Product Development,
Production, etc...). When revenue targets are being exceeded, everyone is quick
to join the celebration and promote their group's contribution to
the success, but when sales goals aren't achieved, these same
departments are equally quick to distance themselves and present a list of
reasons as to why they shouldn't be held accountable for the failure.
Neither scenario presents an accurate view of the contributions each group
made, nor does it create the kind of positive, synergistic
environment needed to create a truly successful company.
